What initially inspired you to pursue a career in DJing, and how did you get started in the industry?

Music inspired me to pursue DJing. I was already creating my own music & producing music for other artists. As a creative I was always looking for different outlets so it was inevitable that I took this path.

What do you believe are the most important skills or qualities that a successful DJ should possess?

I think being creative and adapting to your crowd as a DJ is very important. People want to have a great time & to hear good music, so playing music people will enjoy in your own way is very important.

Can you walk us through your creative process when preparing for a performance or crafting a DJ set?

I personally like to plan my sets the night before. I’m a big fan of adding different genre acapellas to amapiano beats or word play in afrobeats. Basically anything that isn’t normally supposed to be together, I’ll make it work. It roughly takes a couple of hours but yeah purely experimental.

What are some of your most memorable moments from your DJing career so far?

So far my best moments have been hearing the crowd chant my name and watching people struggle to shazam one of my mixes or an unreleased track. The feeling is phenomenal!

Do you solely play Amapiano or are there any other genres you explore when DJing?

I would say I am an Amapiano guru but I do play house & afrobeats as well.

What's next for Cerro?

Definitely releasing a lot more music with international collaborations & hopefully an opportunity to explore modelling.
