With a new studio album on the horizon, the successful relaunch of his label Mains London, and the debut of the Big Smoke festival set to take over Crystal Palace in July, 2024 is looking bright for the multi-talented artist. Now, 'Tribal Mark' has received a nomination for Best Short Film at The National Film Awards.
Earlier this year, the artist released his first short film, 'Tribal Mark,' in the UK, followed by a screening at SXSW and premieres in L.A. and New York. Skepta co-directed the film with Dwight Okechukwu, his partner at the production company 1Plus1, aiming to highlight important social issues affecting non EU immigrants, including mental health and racial prejudice.
The 24 minute film tells the story of Young Mark, an immigrant navigating life in London after moving from Nigeria with his mother. The role is portrayed by rising star Jude Carmichael, who has been nominated for Best Newcomer at The National Film Awards. As Young Mark experiences the highs and lows of his new life, he transforms into Tribal Mark, a character played by Skepta himself. This short film offers the first glimpse into a broader "Tribal Mark" universe, featuring a Black Secret Service, that Skepta and Okechukwu have been developing since the summer of 2021.
