In Conversation: Frozemode

Formed during a “drunken late night phone call” in lockdown, the group thrives on high-energy, punk-infused alternative hip-hop with sharp storytelling. Their singles blending rock, indie, grime, hip-hop, trap, and drill, earned Frozemode a reputation as one of London’s leading alternative rap group, known for merging gritty rap with innovative production. They continue to make waves in the UK’s rap scene with each release.

Where did your vision start and how did it progress?

Our vision started when we were all teenagers linking up separately and bonding over the music we love, free-styling together and not being afraid to ‘mess up’. As we’ve progressed we’ve let go of any influences we might’ve had and strived to create our own singular vision with unfiltered self-expression that is purely FROZEMODE.

Describe your sound in 3 words?

Chaotic, Dynamic, Expressive

Can you tell us about your latest release, Vermin , and what inspired the track?

Vermin is a grimy, nocturnal, rap/rock track inspired by our surroundings growing up in the city. There are vermin around most corners both literally and metaphorically and whilst we hope to rise above them we can’t deny how the presence of vermin in our lives has shaped who we are as people.

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in your career so far and why?

Whether it’s been spitting our unreleased bars to our mates, releasing our debut song, getting Radio 1 plays, or performing at Reading and Leeds Festival, each step we have taken has been the main inspiration to keep moving forward, and the closer we get to the top the hungrier we get.

What do you hope listeners take away from your music?

Don’t worry too much about what other people think about you. Don’t take yourself too seriously, have fun, express yourselves and keep moving forward.

Is there a certain place where you feel the most creative?

To be honest it might sound a bit obvious but the studio when all three of us are together. Real life situations and issues we face tend to spark our creativity the most.

We’re all about new music discovery– who is an artist that you think everybody should be listening to right now?

Jim Legxcy, he’s doing something different merging a bunch of sounds together which we appreciate a lot and like to do ourselves.

How do you approach writing lyrics and what themes do you like to explore?

We all write our own lyrics and it’s important for everything we say to be organic. Self expression is really important. FROZEMODE is made up of 3 individuals who merge into 1, bringing different experiences, ideas and sounds.

What's been a highlight in your work so far?

This August was a pretty crazy month for us where we went on our first tour and performed at Reading & Leeds Festivals. It was definitely a highlight seeing the audience reception to our music and it’s exciting seeing our fan base growing every show.

What can we expect from you next?

A lot of new tracks, a potential project and many more levels to climb. There’s a lot in the works to be honest and we’re excited to share it.
